Facebook ads are a great way to target various audiences without requiring multiple hours or marketing work from you. Up until now you have spent hours, weeks, months and years trying to build your list. Writing article after article and posting on social media but you are still struggling to build your list.
In this article you’ll discover the 5 steps to use Facebook ads to automate your list building and save you some time.
Why Facebook Ads
Before getting into how to use Facebook ads to build your list, it’s important to understand what Facebook ads really are, and just as importantly, what they are not.
Facebook ads are a cost effective way to generate traffic for a blog post or lead magnet or offer you have for sale. Facebook ads are not a magical solution to marketing they take some work, refining and optimization to make them a gold mine for your business.
Oh, I almost forgot – you can use Facebook ads to build your list on autopilot to generate a massive list and profitable sales for your business.
Let’s get into the 6 steps to build your list on autopilot so you can build a massive list and generate sales on demand.
Step 1 Define Your Target Audience
Facebook has over 1.23 billion users monthly active users. If you don’t know who your audience is you will waste a ton of money with no return on your investment. Facebook has a few ways to help you determine this target audience as seen below.
When selecting your demographic you have the options to select age, gender, languages, interest and behaviors. When I select a demographic on Facebook I use the critriea below to narrow my demographic for the best results on my first ads. You want to make sure you are continually testing and optimizing this demographic to produce the best results.
Locations: (Your target location)
Age: (Keep this to a 20 year spread)
Languages: (I prefer people who speak the same language as me)
Interests: (What ever target demographic you are after you can find major magazines, pages, and audiences keep this to about 5 options)
Behaviors: (This can be used to narrow down people who purchased a car recently or spent money online recently etc. I don’t use this area often)
Step 2 Crafting an Offer
When using Facebook ads you need relevant offers or content that will entice your target market to click on your ad. The most basic strategy would be to send traffic to an opt-in page or offer. This could be anything from a free ebook you have written to a free video course. There are more advanced tactics that I get into on my free guide on automating your list building you can pick up here.
For now you lets use the free ebook as our offer for people to join our list. When creating your offer you want to make sure it’s relevant, concise and easy to digest. Random people don’t want to opt-in for a 16 week long email course or a 200 page ebook. They are looking for a specific solution to a problem they are having and they want it quickly. Using this frame work below create your offer that you will use for the next steps in automating your list building efforts.

- Is it concise?
- Is it easy to consume?

Step 3 The Landing Page
This is a short step. In order for people to opt-in to your list you will need some place to send the traffic to get them to opt-in. In a more advanced strategy that I teach in free guide on automating your list building you can get here. In this example you want to use some of the softwares listed below.

Step 4 The Ad
When crafting your ad on Facebook you want to ensure that you include a few things to make this offer stand out to your audience.
- The Headline
- The Image
- The Body Copy
- The CTA Button
Below I added a few examples from of well done Facebook ads that you can use in your own ad to help them convert your audience into subscribers to your list.
Step 5 Retargeting
Retargeting is the cheapest way to build your list fast. Using Facebook ads tracking pixels allows you to capture more leads when you spend money on ads. As you know it’s impossible to get a 100% conversation rate but tracking or retargeting pixels will allow your to capture this missed conversions and allow you to market to them again. Using retargeting tactics will allow you to lower your cost per click, cost per lead and boost your conversion rates.
Now you know about retargeting pixels here is how you can use them to automate your list building. While you are sending traffic to your opt-in pages offering the lead magnet. You will have a custom audience pixel on your opt-in page this will allow you to build a retargeting list with Facebook for everyone who has visited your lead magnet page. After someone opts in for your lead magnet on the thank you page you will place a conversion pixel to tell Facebook that this lead has converted.
Using the custom audience pixels you can retarget the people who didn’t opt into your offer and target the people who opted into your offer but didn’t buy anything. This allows you to create target ads to a specific audience and boost your conversions.
Follow the steps below to setup your Facebook pixels to start building your retargeting list using your website, landing pages and sales page.
Conversion Pixel (Use these to tell Facebook that leads are converting)
- In Ads Manager, click Tools and then select Conversion Tracking
- Click Create Pixel in the top right.
- Select a category from the dropdown menu and give your conversion pixel a name. Choose a category for your pixel my most often is “Leads” if you are using multiple tracking pixels on your marketing funnel you will have to select a different category for each segment to get accurate reporting.
- Click Create Pixel.
- Copy the code that appears and add it to your website/blog or landing page.
Custom Audience Pixel (Use these for retargeting)
- Go to your Audience tab in Ads Manager.
- Click Tools and then choose Audiences.
- Click Create Audience in the top left.
- Select Custom Audience.
- Click Website Traffic.
- Set your parameters for this example you want to make sure you select custom combination and exclude the thank you pages of your lead magnet offers to make sure you don’t retarget the wrong people, give your Custom Audience a name and click Create Audience.
Bonus Step 6 Making Some Money!!!
We all know that money keeps the business afloat and it wouldn’t help to build your list for a net cost of 0 dollars. You will be spending money on Facebook ads and to keep this automated list building system churning you will need to have money to pump into the system. Only so many businesses can afford to spend money endlessly to build their list without monetizing the system.
So, how can you monetize your automated list building system?
You will offer these cold leads a tripwire offer anywhere from $5-$25 dollars. You can offer a higher priced product depending on your market. The goal here is to acquire buyers not to squeeze them for every dollar on the first interaction. This monetization strategy will help you make your money back from the money you spend on Facebook ads.
In order to do this you will use the Facebook tracking pixels and additional sales page and a lower dollar product. You will offer this low dollar product to people who opt in for your lead magnet. You will use the tracking pixel to retarget the people who opted in that didn’t purchase your low dollar offer.
You will also be using the tracking pixel to retarget the people who didn’t opt in the first time and get them to sign up to you list and get them in front of your trip wire offer.
